Having trouble fitting into jeans recently? Finding yourself standing in front of the closet feeling frustrated over the fact that nothing seems to fit anymore? Probably it’s about time to lose some pounds. There are a lot of ways to shed those extra pounds. One popular and common way is fasting to lose weight. Some practice fasting for short periods of time to help them adjust to a new diet or to cleanse their body. In all of these circumstances, fasting would involve proceeding with your day without food. Although, there are some types of fasting programs that only a selection of food groups or types are prohibited. Most importantly, always get professional opinion or guidance from a qualified health care professional before proceeding with any kind of weight loss regimen. Fasting to lose weight is no exception to that.

Fasting to lose weight is not the most practical method nor is it the safest diet regimen. A chunk of the population would use it as a means of cleansing their bodies, ridding it of toxins.  The function of losing weight through fasting would vary depending on the type of fasting one opts to use. There are fasting diets that only allows the person to drink water and nothing else. There is also a practice where raw food is ingested for a span of one or more days while there are those that only consume food every other day. There is also a liquid diet that allows only the consumption of liquids such as juice or tea. Lastly, there are those that do not void themselves of food but instead mind the calorie content of the food they consume. When a person fasts, the body is left with no choice but to utilize its energy stores that are considered the fuel that allows you to function daily. The problem that doing fasting to lose weight poses is how to maintain the weight you achieved or avoid gaining back the pounds you lost. During the process of fasting, there is little to no food intake, our body’s metabolic processes would slow down in order to conserve its energy stores. After the weight is lost, some people have the tendency to go back to their original food consumption or their typical diet. Since the body, has already adapted to the previous state of conserving energy, it would now cause the increased storage for energy due to the lowered metabolic rate. This result to gaining back the weight you once lost and there is even a probability that more weight is gained after the dieting phase. Fasting to lose weight leads to the adaptation of the body to the new environmental conditions. It will reduce a person’s appetite hence, less hungry. Unfortunately, when fasting is discontinued, hormones responsible for signalling the brain for hunger and appetite would increase again and you may find yourself feeling starved and during these cases, an individual has a more likely chance to go on a binge. Evidence from recent research shows that fasting to lose weight can be effective and there is a way to avoid the sudden drop in the appetite and the hormones related to it. This is to do intermittent fasting, which involves eating every other day. Similarly, these studies also show that in the long term people who do intermittent fasting still had weight issues since they could not successfully maintain their figure.

For first timers, fasting can be a little overwhelming in the beginning. Taking 24 hours and avoiding the temptation of eating at all costs can be difficult. Fortunately, it does get better with time. The longer and more consistently an individual performs it, the more likely that person will be able to achieve their goal weight. Remember never to rush oneself during the process of dieting. Fasting to lose weight takes time, patience, discipline and perseverance. Take small steps if you are unsure that you can go through 24 hours without feed. Also, mind the calories that you take in. Even with consistent fasting, if an individual consumes too many calories, there is a less likely chance that they will lose weight.
